Carla Farnum Clancy

Carla M. Clancy, 64, of Gardiner, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014, with her family at her side. She was born in Farmington on Dec. 18, 1949, the first of five children, of Carl and Morna Farnum.

A graduate of the Baxter School for the deaf, Carla was largely responsible, for the formation of the first cheerleading squad at the school, designing uniforms and choreographing routines. After Baxter she attended Gallaudet college in Washington, D.C.

A longtime employee of the Department of Health and Human Services in Augusta, Carla was an avid fan of all Boston sports teams, the Patriots and Red Sox in particular. A strong advocate for the deaf, Carla enjoyed teaching sign language, both in her home, and through adult education programs in the area. When she wasn't working, teaching, advocating for the deaf, knitting or rooting on her favorite teams, Carla most loved, spending time with her friends and family.

Carla was predeceased by her father, Carl Farnum; her husband, Tom Clancy; and brother Curt Farnum. She is survived by her mother, Morna Farnum, of Madison; siblings Kathy Farnum, of Old Town, Carl R. Farnum and his wife, Joyce, of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Kelly Clauson and her husband, Jim, of Madison; sons Shane Clancy, of Gardiner, and Chad Cunningham and his partner, Wendy Mullen, of Waldoboro; stepdaughter Amy Bennett, her husband Scott, and their children, Abby and Patrick, of Clarksville, Tenn.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Alna cemetery, on Route 218 in Alna. Those attending are asked, if possible, to wear any article of clothing representing any Boston sports team. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements under the care of Staples Funeral Home, Gardiner.
