Alan R. Barwiolek

July 19, 1952 - April 17, 1996


Alan Barwiolek, who helped found the New York Deaf Theater as part of a lifelong campaign to improve things for those in the silent world he was consigned to at birth, died on April 17, 1996. He was 43 and had been associate professor of sign language studies at Union College in Plainfield, N.J.

Prior to this position, he was a deaf-blind specialist at the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and a counselor at the Hoehne Rehabilitation Center. He earned his master's degree in educational theatre from New York University in 1979.
